Backend Engineer - SF, CA
Gemstar Staffing Group is looking for a Backend Engineer for an onsite position for a Startup located in San Francisco.
Please send us your resume on our contact us page if you meet the skills below.
The Client
The client builds and deploys AI research agents that gather context for companies doing B2B sales in the same way their human sales reps would do. These agents are self-learning, fully automated, and scalable.
The client has scaled quickly, as the fastest growing company in their Y Combinator batch.
The Role
As one of our first engineering hires, you'll shape the very foundation of the company. You will be building their product from the ground up, putting your fingerprints all over their tech stack, processes, and company DNA.
You'll work directly with the team members to make big decisions and go 1 to 100. When something needs fixing, you'll spot it and fix it. When the client needs to figure out the right approach, you'll be a big proponent of the final decision.
This role comes with significant responsibilities, end result of the autonomy you'll have to execute on your vision. We're looking for someone who thrives when given space to solve problems their own way, with understanding of our organization’s priorities and goals.
What You'll Do
Develop and train multi-agent systems to fulfill complex workflows
Architect scalable backend systems that power our AI agents' learning and decision-making capabilities
Work directly with users to gather feedback and rapidly iterate on product features
Build and maintain high-performance, production-grade systems that our customers rely on daily
What We're Looking For
Have 1–3 years of experience at a fast-growing B2B SaaS startup/scaleup/big tech (Series A or later)
Have worked on a dev team (4+ engineers) and understand team dynamics
Experience with web development (Next.js and TypeScript preferred)
Prefer deep work over constant chatter - more thoughtful than performative
Experience in enterprise-facing, AI-adjacent companies ideal
Think in systems and care about doing things the right way
Are self-driven, highly detail-oriented, and always improving
Communicate clearly and listen well - personable without ego
Value substance over hype, team wins over personal recognition
Note: The client care more about your building capabilities and shipping velocity than your formal background or credentials. Show us what you've built!
Salary: $120K - $190K
Equity: 0.25-0.5%
Visa sponsorship not available
On-site work policy: In Person only in SF
